Almost nobody prepares for the assessment centre
There is a strange gap in how graduates prepare. Enormous effort goes into the CV and the cover letter, some into interviews, and almost none into the assessment centre, despite it often being the final filter before an offer and the stage with the most people competing in the room.
Partly this is because it is hard to practise alone. You cannot run a group exercise by yourself, and the format varies by employer. So people turn up having read a blog post, and discover that a group case exercise is scored on things they had not considered: whether you brought someone quieter into the discussion, whether you tracked the time, whether you actually answered the brief.
It is also the stage where the scoring is least intuitive. Dominating the discussion feels like leadership and usually scores badly. Saying little to avoid mistakes scores worse. Knowing what assessors are marking changes how you behave more than any amount of general confidence.
