Talking to a webcam with nobody on the other end is genuinely hard
In a normal interview you read the room. Someone nods, you know to keep going. In a one-way video interview there is no room. There is a question on screen, thirty seconds to think, two minutes to answer, and usually one attempt.
People who interview well in person routinely do badly at this the first time. They pause too long, run out of things to say at ninety seconds, or talk for the full two minutes without answering the question. None of that reflects their ability. It reflects never having done it.
